I received this interesting question from one of my readers and I wanted to share it with you:
I’m subscribed to your blog and love it! I have just one question: Are sponge-painted walls in or out for 2011? I don’t see sponged walls in any decorating magazine…except for those that are more slanted towards DIY(?) Thanks so much, in advance!
I want to be honest with you because you are asking for my advice. I might be a little biased in my opinion though because sponge painted walls have never been a favorite of mine even when they were in style. I realize that there are true artists that paint beautiful faux walls, but that is a gift I feel only few can achieve. Most of the walls I have seen were DIY and they looked as if they were DIY. This is what I think of when I hear ‘faux finish’:
The word “faux” means “false” in French. Faux painting refers to a variety of decorative finishes that can be applied to walls, including sponging, rag rolling, stippling and dragging.
I don’t know if I want to see the ‘before’.
DYK- “In the late 1980s and early 1990s faux finishing saw a major revival, as wallpaper began to fall out of fashion. At this point, faux painting started to become extremely popular in home environments, with high end homes leading the trends.” Wikipedia
Below are photos of a different kind of faux finishes for walls. hmmmmm……
No thank you.
If you do want to try faux painting, Ben Moore.com has a Faux and Decorative Finishes section that explains very well all of the steps and directions to achieve these following techniques:
- Chalkboard Paint
- Checkerboard Porch
- Color Washing
- Decorative Deck Staining
- Geometric Reflections
- Glow in the Dark
- Washed Stripes

Sorry to those who do like it- I just do not. I really did a lot of research to try and find a few nice pictures of faux painted walls to share. Guess what- no luck!!
So yes Connie, if you are asking me, I think I would repaint the walls. Just for a new, fresh look. There are such beautiful paint colors out there now! Yes, I do think faux painted walls are out. But let’s hear what my readers think – In or Out? I would really love to hear what your thoughts are on this one.
