Vignette definition: 1. short literacy sketch, scene in film ,etc. 2. picture that shades off at the edges. Webster’s Dictionary I can’t tell you how many dictionary articles I looked up. Where did the word vignette come up in decorating?

HGTV explained it well: “Think of a vignette as creating a beautiful still life. You can make a vignette on top of any flat surface: a dresser, table, bookshelf, countertop or window ledge. You can use accessories like vases, mirrors, plants, greenery, photos or other personal belongings to create a mood, just like a movie set designer does for a film. A vignette makes a room look more polished and pulled together.”

Accessorizing a home is my favorite part of designing! Vignettes are a great way to add interest and personality to a room. There are not any fast and hard rules to making a scene but here are a few tips that will help:
*Always use odd numbers of items. Groups of three or five work particularly well and are stronger visually than a group of two or four.

*One item should be taller than the rest. A lamp, tall vase or even a picture on the wall placed low to the tabletop to include in the scene.
*Vary the heights of objects. Use small pedestals or books to add height.

*Try to vary the texture of your objects to make it more interesting.

*Create dimension by leaning objects against a mirror or picture against the wall. Mirrors are a great way to add depth to the scene.

*I love to use personal items that mean something to the homeowner. Especially fun and quirky items that make a person smile!
Here are a few of my vignettes I have in my home:

I love using my little pieces I purchased from a great little shop in North Conway, NH.

New and old, vintage and modern all mixed up.

This scene looks much better in real life than in this photo:

Real professional photography, isn’t it?

I do not remember where I picked up the dog above, just love him.

Every little thing in the above picture means something to me and my family. Isn’t the puppy not the cutest you have ever seen in your life?!

And something I love that makes me smile as soon as I walk in my back door:

Just love this little bird from Pier One.

See, you can make vignettes too! It really does make your room more interesting. And that is what makes a home happy!
