Balance in the Bedroom

What do these various styles of bedrooms all have in common?

If you guessed symmetry, you are correct! We know that the focal point of the bedroom is usually the bed. I have found the most pleasing look for a bedroom design is having symmetry on both sides of the bed. You do not necessarily need to have the exact same side tables, but they do need to be of the same height. ( If I am designing a bedroom for a client, I strongly suggest using the same tables.) The lamps are what I believe is the significant accessory that will give you that balanced, cohesive look.

Look at the pictures of the guest room below.

It looks symmetrical, but something is just not right. So, lets try another lamp.

This new lamp on the left has more height and width, more presence. Also, the new lamp has a beige lampshade which coordinates with the beige in the comforter and with the pictures. (Another future post- coordinating white with white, cream/beige with cream/beige).

Beautiful White Kitchens

Isn’t this kitchen beautiful?

I am always talking about bringing color into your homes and seem to neglect the color white. I do not mention white as often because white is a complicated color to work with because of the different tints you see in white such as orange, green, gray and yellow. One of my absolute favorite whites, (and I know HGTV talks about it all the time, but it really is a perfect white), is Ben Moore Cloud White OC-130 in a semigloss finish. I also have worked with BM Chantilly Lace OC-65, BM Mayonnaise OC-85, BM White Dove OC-17 and Acadia White OC-38. All beautiful whites.

Over the years I have looked at thousands of kitchens in decorating magazines and websites. The photo above is my very favorite kitchen. It is the all white look I love. So clean and classy. I think the white/cream cabinets are so fresh, beautiful and timeless. They will never go out of style. I promise myself I will one day have an all white kitchen! The problem is- my husband. Why do men get so uptight about painting over the cabinets? I am not changing the wood honey, just the color.
