Since I have been in design for about 20 years now, I have seen a lot of colors go in and out of style. But when talking about neutrals, not much has changed at all. Such as the colors below that are as popular now as 20 years ago.

Even after all these years, 95% of the time, color experts still go straight to Ben Moore’s Historical Colors.
Why? Because they have proven over time to be colors that are a collection of time-honored hues comprising their most popular palette. Steeped in tradition, the refined, elegant colors of the Historical Collection deliver timeless color that can be used in traditional as well as contemporary spaces.
Neutral colors help to put the focus on other colors or serve to tone down colors that might otherwise be overpowering on their own. See how in the photo above, the fireplace is the focus in the room?
This is an example of how a neutral background works best by not competing with the main colors of the room.
In my post about my favorite neutral colors here, all of my favorite neutrals were pulled from the historical collection. In my article ‘Top Selling BM paint Colors for 2010, most all colors are also from the same historical collection.
So next time you begin searching for that perfect neutral color for your home, take a look at Ben Moore’s Historical Colors first knowing that they are proven winners and used by many experts.

Take a look at chatsworth cream 225 or twisted oak path 226. Both colors work beautifully with bennington gray. Hope this helps!
Bert,
To my uneducated eye the two colors you chose should work together as they both seem to have green undertones.
Perhaps you have some pinky beige in your carpet or bedding that is causing the problem?
I think I have answered my own question!
Bennington Gray: green undertones
Shaker Beige: pink undertones
Monroe Bisque: yellow undertones
Did I get these right?
I would like to know which colours could be teamed up with Bennington Gray. I have used that colour in a guest room with Delaware Putty. I was never quite happy with it. Maybe it was the combination of the 2 colours (Bottom was Delaware Putty; top was Bennington Gray). The bedding was red with beige. Anyone have any suggestions or ideas on this?
Would be interested in what the undertones are to the four classic beiges you listed.
Manchester Tan: greenish undertone?
What about the other three?
Thanks!
Lisa
I so agree Connie! I like to change things up a lot- easier to buy new accessories.
As a decorator myself, the thing I love about neutrals is that you can use any color you desire for accents in the room be it throw pillows, vases, flowers, etc. Then when you get tired of that accent color or you want to use colors of the season or holidays, it’s so easy to change it out for a new accent color and the wall color still looks great!
Nice post! We’re looking for good neutrals to decorate with but the colors keep coming out different than they look on the swatch!
