A reader wrote and asked me recently “Which wall colors work best with a brick fireplace?”

That is not a question I hear very often anymore. Most of the brick fireplaces you see now are painted over in white (which I love):

I can understand why people like the look of old brick. Like everything else today we are loving vintage and sustainable, I think the natural brick can have it’s own charm.

So what colors would I suggest for the walls when working with a stone fireplace? When you look at natural brick, do you see the white, cream, tan and soft gold in it?

Those are the colors I usually start with. I think the creamy ivories and tans work best:

I usually stay away from dark wall colors when choosing colors for a fireplace wall because I feel the dark brick and the dark wall color will just compete with each other.
I do like a soft sage green with the brick:

Some soft yellows will work. What do you think of this yellow with brick below:
I’m not loving it. I think a softer yellow would work better. Look how pretty paired with the gold ceiling:

These are some the best colors that I would suggest to use when working with a natural brick fireplace. Do you agree? Do you have any other color suggestions?

Would love to see a picture Jennifer!
I have a fireplace in my dining room that has dark reds and dark browns with a clay colored mortar in between them. The mantle is a dark reddish brown wood. I painted our walls with Benjamin Moore’s ‘York Harbor Yellow’ seven years ago and haven’t been able to find a color since then that would please me as much! I love dark reds and deep yellows!
I do not care for the orange brick eithier- that’s why I did not even write about it!
Thanks Shiela! I do love those rooms too. Way back I had a condo with a brick wall and used to hang different size empty picture frames on it. Never knew what to do with it!
I’m one of the brick lovers – natural brick, not the gold. I love the photos you chose, and my favorites are the #5 & #6 Pinterest shots. That’s the look I like. I’m a hopeless romantic in the loft sense – would so love to have a warehouse loft one day!
I think it depends on the colors of the brick, just like when deciding on exterior colors with different colored brick. I love painted fireplaces, too, but if the brick is nice and red it might be better to keep it. It’s that orangey brick that needs to go!
