Do you ever wish you had a larger kitchen? If a complete renovation is not possible right now, how about a few design ideas you can do now to make your kitchen appear larger?

* Get rid of countertop clutter. This simple step will free up visual space to make the room look larger. Baskets and trays don’t only look great, but they work well as organizers and help keep collections together:

* A mirrored backsplash. This is an easy DIY project that will make any space seem visually larger:

* Open shelving. Ok, you may have more dusting to do, but look how the open shelves really open up the kitchen:

Cann you tell that I love the look of the open shelves??
* Glass front cabinets is another trick to make the room seem lighter and brighter:

* Good lighting. Many older homes do not have overhead kitchen lighting. It might be an investment to have lighting put into your kitchen, but image how nice the brightness will always welcome you. Maybe better lighting will help you cook better too!

* Light walls, floors and cabinetry. A white or light neutral color throughout the kitchen is a certain way to visually lighten and brighten your kitchen and give the image of an open space:

Thanks Sheila! I love your blog too!
I too love the open shelving Linda! All of a sudden- just love it!
Thanks Connie! I am in love with open shelving lately- looks great! I like that idea of all one color- your kitchen must have looked fabulous! Thanks for sharing!
I know Luci. Easy and inexpensive too!
I love the mirror tip Kelly! It really opens up the space and I never would of thought of it.
@Sheila….I too look like a two headed monster to my clients when telling them about decluttering their counter tops! LOL!
If I was building a new house, I would definitely have some open shelving. Love it..and great pics of that Kelly!
When we redid our former home’s kitchen, we added a terrific new overhead lighting fixture. Sadly, it didn’t help me cook any better…haha! But I liked being in the kitchen more
One tip I used on my own kitchen was to paint everything the same color: ceiling, walls, cabinets, even the floor got painted SW Decor White. It really opened up the small space. The countertops were a very pale green that gave it just enough of a difference so it wasn’t too sterile. I added in a lot of “textural” things so it wasn’t blah. Everyone who came through when we were selling loved the kitchen
Great post Kelly! I love getting ideas from kitchen photos!
Love the open shelving look..if and when we build in NH that is the plan.
No tips to share, but I agree with all of yours! My favorite is probably the least expensive, and yet one of the hardest for so many to do… *Get rid of counter-top clutter! Why is that one so tough? In staging consultations when I suggest that one, I instantly grow 2 heads!
I’m really enjoying your posts, Kelly. They’re filled with such great stuff!
