Obsessing Over Open Kitchen Shelving

I don’t know why I suddenly have such a love for open shelving in the kitchen:

Maybe because it is bringing back such good memories of my staying with my Great Grandma Cain when I was little. Grandma Cain lived out (way out) in the country in Pennsylvania. I do remember she had an outhouse in the backyard (memories!) and I remember spending time with her in her kitchen. And I remember that she had open shelves!

Or maybe I am loving the open shelves just for the simplicity of the look:

You have to admit, it is a great way to show off your creativity:

And iff you get tired of it, just change it around!

This look is a little to cluttered for me:

For myself, I like the thicker shelves better than the thinner boards:

I also think that I would want just a section of the wall in the kitchen used as open shelves that I can decorate:

So that I can bring more personality into the kitchen!:

Would you consider putting open shelves in your kitchen? I know they will be extra work, but do you think their beauty is worth it? Love to hear your thoughts!

I think we think a lot alike Sheila!

  2. I love the look of open shelves, and one day just might go for it – funny how they take you back to another time and place. They also remind me of my Gran…

That is a great point Kristie to use only two colors at most. I bet your shelves are beautiful!

You are so right about why people shy away from them Connie. And if you do not have the creativity to display, it could look a real mess. I’m sure you will figure out a way to work them in your new home!

I think we always seem to want the opposite of what we have! I’m sure you find it a lot less work now Nancy!

  6. I love open shelving! In our kitchen remodel we went from a kitchen with no cabinetry and a pantry with open shelving to just the opposite. No open shelving, no pantry.

While I do miss the open shelving, I still get my display fix with our Hutch and we have one cabinet that has glass inserts in the double doors.

  7. I too like open shelving but have never had it in my own kitchen. I think most people shy away from it because of a several reasons (at least those I’ve suggested it to)
1)They have too much stuff to organize nicely for “display”
2)They’re afraid they’d have to dust/clean all the time
3)They think their everyday stuff isn’t “worthy” of display (i.e. dishes, glasses, etc.)
    4)”Won’t that look ‘undone’?” Haha!

In our former house, the previous owners had removed doors from two sections of upper cabinet. It was great! I used it for a display area and it looked so cute when I did cottage style with white wear. I’m trying to figure which doors in our new place could be logically removed but so far, nothing seems to work ;-)

If I had open shelves, they would have to be displayed prettily and organized. Too much “stuff” would drive me batty…LOL!

  8. I have some open shelving by default in my kitchen. I have a large built-in hutch on one end of my 1940′s kitchen. It’s huge with LOTS of shelving. I have lots of white dishes and glassware in it, one section of gold glass and one section of green glass. I used to have lots of colorful things on it, but it starts looking overwhelmingly cluttered with too much color. It’s wise to keep it to no more than 2 colors. With opening shelving, editing is really important!
