Looking through this month’s Elle Décor, I could not help but notice how many advertisements for sectional sofas there were. So many that I had to count them.
I quit counting at page 48 and there was a total of 8 ads. That is quite a few! I remember when my husband and I bought our first home and we used to go to the furniture store every Friday and each put $10.00 down for layaway on a new modern raisin-colored sectional. That was a little while ago.
Then the sofa and loveseat combo became popular and the sectional was a trend of the past. But now it looks as if the manufacture’s are getting together and pushing out the sectional for us consumers to run out and buy.
Once again, something new for us consumers to hurry and purchase because it is fresh and in style (so says the manufacturer’s!) I admit that sometimes I am also swayed by popular trends. By peer pressure.
Remember my office I painted a soft, watery blue? The robin-egg color blue that everyone loves?

Well, trying to be a good blogger and designer, I felt peer pressure to pick a color for my office that everybody loves and wants for their own home!

But guess what? Just because I wrote here about loving the color so much, now that it is painted, I am not really crazy for it. I’m just not feeling it. (No, I have not told my husband yet!)
I wish I had just picked a color I love, not what everyone else might think.
Another example today, the new Benjamin Moore color for 2013 was introduced:

Lemon Sorbet 2019-60. My first thoughts are that I am not really loving this yellow. Too bright I think. But I am reading all around blog land that everyone seems to love it!

But let’s see if I change my mind in a couple months after seeing it everywhere. Will my own thoughts be changed by the peer pressure of everyone else loving it? Have you ever made a purchase decision that was more about what everyone else loves rather that your own true feelings?

I definitely don’t love the new colour. Way too lemony for my taste. I will admit to owning a sectional though:)
I don’t think everyone’s loving the Lemon Sorbet – I’ve been getting lots of comments to the contrary. Here in the South, there was a huge trend in the late 90′s for the main “neutral” throughout new builds to be a goldy-yellow. So most people here are sick of yellow and are just now moving away from that! Follow your heart
That’s so funny Julie! I hope they don’t chew on your new sofa you get!
I am so glad you said that Sheila! I thought I was the only one who wasn’t crazy about the new color. And I do like the new sectionals- because of their new look and great comfort!
I LOVE your honesty! And I do not love BM’s lemon sorbet! I was so disappointed when they announced it. It’s so tough to stay true in this day of visual influence and blogging land. Don’t get me wrong – I love our blogging world, but I find I’m really working hard at running my ideas through a second filter – do I really love this, or do I think I should love this? What a great post, Kelly! We could use a sectional for better function in our space, though
Yes! The ugly sectional in my living room, it just doesn’t work. Luckily, my dogs thought it was tasty so I’ll be getting something new as soon as my dog gets over his chewing fetish.
Oh Kelly I am SO with you about trends! I think everyone can “get under the spell” of advertising! We think we must have it or we’re out of date. Truth be told, that’s exactly what the goal of advertising is
They never seem to factor in whether or not we truly like or want it–just that they must sell it.
I do like yellow but BM’s Lemon Sorbet is too “clean” for most rooms, in my opinion. In our former house we had both a yellow living room and master bedroom. It was lovely but it was a more “dirtied down” yellow and it was beautiful in sunlight and evening glow from our uplights as well. And it worked wonderfully with the wood tones of our hardwood floor. (Cracked Wheat by Behr.)
I always tell my clients “Don’t decorate to please your friends, extended family or neighbors. They don’t live here: YOU do!” I often extend that advice by saying “Yes, I can tell you what the latest trend is for appliances, cabinets, countertops, colors, furniture, etc. But if YOU don’t love it, don’t do it!”
Kelly, paint out that robin’s egg blue you don’t like. Be happy: It’s YOUR home
And don’t worry too much about hubby…You know what they say “Happy wife, Happy Life!”
It is after all just paint
