When looking online and in newspapers at home listings, have you ever noticed the number of homes that still have outdated window treatments?

If you are serious about selling your home, be sure to take a look at your windows. If you do not have custom-made window treatments that are less than eight years old, it is time to take them down.

Even though it’s difficult to separate your emotions, try to remember that when you are selling your home, it needs to be as neutral as possible. Since each person’s home style is so different, try to make your home a ‘blank canvas’ so a potential buyer can really see themselves in your home. You have to remember your good taste might not be someone else’s good taste.

What are “outdated window treatments”? I am not referring to privacy blinds, but those swags and panels you have covering your windows that have been there since the 1990’s. And those panels that do not come all the way to the floor? They need to be taken down.

I cannot tell you how many times on a staging consultation that I walked up to the windows and pulled back the curtains in a home and the client says “Ohhhh..” The light that fills the room immediately makes such a great change and feel in the room. Best of all, it is free!

By removing your curtains, the room will instantly be lighter and brighter which will make the room appear larger. Which home do you think a potential home buyer will fall in love with? A dark, deary home or a brightly lit space? The sunshine will win every time.

So take down those curtains and let the beautiful outdoors shine through! Not only will potential buyers be impressed, but you might love the look yourself!

Obsessing Over Open Kitchen Shelving

I don’t know why I suddenly have such a love for open shelving in the kitchen:

Maybe because it is bringing back such good memories of my staying with my Great Grandma Cain when I was little. Grandma Cain lived out (way out) in the country in Pennsylvania. I do remember she had an outhouse in the backyard (memories!) and I remember spending time with her in her kitchen. And I remember that she had open shelves!

Or maybe I am loving the open shelves just for the simplicity of the look:

You have to admit, it is a great way to show off your creativity:

And iff you get tired of it, just change it around!

This look is a little to cluttered for me:

For myself, I like the thicker shelves better than the thinner boards:

I also think that I would want just a section of the wall in the kitchen used as open shelves that I can decorate:

So that I can bring more personality into the kitchen!:

Would you consider putting open shelves in your kitchen? I know they will be extra work, but do you think their beauty is worth it? Love to hear your thoughts!

Moving Into Your First Home

Saturday, June 23rd, 2012

my-juli.blogspot.com

This past weekend, my daughter moved into her first home. I thought I would share some of my favorite advice with her, and any of you that have moved recently, are planning to move, or making any updates to your home. Enjoy!

* Do not expect to be unpacked and ‘House Beautiful’ in a few days. Making a home yours takes time!

google image

* Do not run out and buy ‘stuff’ just to fill your rooms. That is a big waste of money and you might end up purchasing items that you will tire of quickly.

* Spend money wisely on large furnishings. For example, purchase the best made sofa you can afford so that it will last you for years.

* Stay away from buying ‘trend’ furniture. It is sure to go out of style quickly. Instead purchase smaller accessories in trend colors that can easily be replaced.

* Your large furnishings, i.e sofa, should be a neutral color that will not go out of style. Color comes in later with chairs, pillows and accessories.

* Paint is an inexpensive way to update and refresh a room without having to change anything else. Paint offers the best choice for a makeover that’s high on style and low on cost.

* Mirrors are a girl and decorator’s best friend!

* Look for chairs and tables that can you could easily repaint into something you love.

* Console tables are a great buy! These tables look great and can be used in many different ways.

* Buy large art you love instead of odd, small shapes that will get lost up on the wall.

* Make sure every room has something in it that makes you smile when you walk in.

* You will have problems with a new home! That is just a small price you will pay to own a home.

* Remember that it is a work in progress. Be sure to enjoy yourself in your new home meanwhile with friends and family!

Pottery Barn’s Fall 2010 Color List

Friday, August 20th, 2010

Did you see the pillow on the new cover of the new Bed & Bath Pottery Barn catalog?

Bonne Nuit Lumbar Pillow Cover, 14 x 36"

It says Bonne Nuit.  I was excited to see one of my favorite color names from Benjamin Moore’s Affinity collection. I love this color!

Ben Moore spelled this paint chip wrong- it is not Bonnie Nuit, it is Bonne Nuit!  haha

Why would they have a paint color named on their pillow?  What does Bonne Nuit mean?  So I read the description of the pillow.  Ohhhhhh.

Ornate script spells out french words for good night.” Did you know Bonne Nuit meant goodnight?  I did not either.

So, getting back to the subject, ( I saw the catalog and my mind went every which way!) I looked online at Pottery Barn and saw that they have added their 2010 Fall list of  28 Ben Moore paints, with page numbers, to go along with their new Fall catalog here.  Ok, here is another mistake.  Look at the color chart, they listed the same color 3-4 times.  Crazy!  Of course the colors are all light neutrals, same as always for Pottery Barn.  Oh wait, excuse me, there are two bold blues!

Pottery Barn Newburyport Blue

I have used a few of the colors that are listed that I love because of their versatility to work with so many other colors.  Hush is a color from the Affinity Color Collection at Benjamin Moore which is described as a sophisticated palette of harmonious hues designed to express your color vision with confidence. The introduction of 144 beautiful colors was designed so that each color can work on it’s own or in combination with any other color in the Affinity collection.  Both of the colors Manchester Tan and Hush work well in living rooms.  They are neutrals to work well with other colors, but strong enough to hold up on their own.

And one of my favorite colors to use for ceilings is Affinity’s Constellation.

It is a beautiful light blue shade.  I had read an article a short time ago here at The House Of Turquoise, where blue painted ceilings were featured.  Don’t you love how the ceilings seem to open up to the sky?  I am going to use this pretty blue in my next bedroom project.  I will be sure to post pictures to share with you!

So what do you think of Pottery Barn’s Fall colors?  Great for those looking for that soft colored background.  But I guess that is what Pottery Barn represents, a classic collection of furniture and accessories.
