Wrong Bedroom Color Choice

Saturday, September 10th, 2011

Above is a photo of a bedroom that I painted and decorated a few years ago. I thought it looked pretty good, but I always felt that something was “off” and I just could not figure it out. Can you see it? :

Does this picture below help?: Hint: The headboard is not the key item you should be focusing on in your bedroom when choosing wall colors.

The most significant item in your bedroom you should be working with in choosing a wall color (and its undertones) is your bedding. Your comforter is the largest, most considerable sized item in the room. right? So now can you tell what is not working in this bedroom?:

Answer: The yellow bedding is clashing with the pinky beige of the wall and headboard. When you are trying to pull your entire room color scheme together, there must be a relationship between your wall color paint and the colors of your fabric, flooring, woodwork and accents. I had chosen a red undertone wall paint to go with the chocolate brown headboard. Very bad- but in my defense, this room was painted a few years ago before I had taken Maria’s color course! :)

Did you also notice that the walls and bedding are a clean/dirty combination? The beige wall color looks dirty and muddy next to the clean and bright comforter:

Solution?  I think the easiest way to fix the room so that the colors flow together is to change the bedding. Maybe something like this:

or how about this beautiful green:

Well, I better get shopping. Macy’s is having a huge bedding sale!

I would love to hear your comments!

Bringing Back Your Dining Room, part 1

Friday, February 25th, 2011

Not listed in any specific order, here are just a few quick and affordable ideas to bring your dining room into this century.

 Number Ten-

Look at your table.  Do you like it?  Is it worth keeping? If you are not ready to buy a new table now, how about just decorating the one you have?  If you really do not like to look at, purchase a beautiful fabric tablecloth to cover it. Unlike your mom’s old vinyl tablecloths, today there are some really pretty ones out there:

Crate&Barrel:

RuusuTclothNapS11

And Macy’s:

Tommy Bahama Table Linens, Set of 4 Woodrift Floral Napkins                 Lenox Table Linens, Chirp 52" x 70" Tablecloth

A more modern look would be to use runners.  One long one down the length of table, or two or three placed sideways across the table:

Rachel Ashwell.

Paula Deen

Number Nine:

Do you still have that outdated brass chandelier hanging?

You can see how to update here by spray painting. Or, if you have not looked for lighting lately, there is a wide, affordable selection at Lowe’s and Lamps Plus for example.

Portfolio 5-Light Bronze Traditional Chandelier

The above chandelier can be found at Lowe’s for only $168.00.  Think of how pretty your room can be with beautiful lighting!   A great focal point spot.

Number Eight:

Rugs. Do you have a rug in the dining room?  Maybe it can be taken out for a new look.  Or if you still love it, pull one of the colors out of rug to use as inspiration in choosing a paint color.

Cathy Kincaid

Number Seven:

Window Treatments!  Step back and take a good look at them.  Are they blocking your outdoor view?  Are they older than 8 years old?  If you are not happy with them- take them down!  Open windows will always look stylish, fresh and happy!  If you can afford new custom curtains, go for it!  Fabrics are just beautiful out there. Or if you want to diy, hanging a black iron window rod close to ceiling and hang full panels down each side of window. Just try something new if you are not happy with them.

Number Six:

Hanging Artwork the correct way.  My favorite dining rooms I see that really make an impression is when a large print is used on one wall.

If you have a set of two or more pictures, bring them closer together!  Just about 2-3 inches apart is perfect.  They will make a much bigger impact all together, rather than spacing far apart trying to fill the whole wall.  And the dining room is one of my favorite places to use mirrors.  Great way to add sparkle and shine to the space.

So, I will see you back here in a few days and continue the list with ideas for quick, affordable updates for your dining room.

January White Sales

Tuesday, December 21st, 2010

We know it’s coming! If you know your shopping, then you know that January is ”white sale” time!  This time of year is the best for finding “great buys” on sheets, towels and lots of other items for your home.

I actually found the history of the ‘white sale’ pretty cool.  In 1878, John Wanamaker of Philadelphia department store fame, decreed January to be the time for a “white sale.” Bed linens, which were available in white only, were sold at a discount. It’s believed he might have done so to keep linen makers in business during a slow time of year.

Photo File

It wasn’t until the late 1950s that prints, as well as colored sheets, were also included in January white sales. White sales also include blankets, bedspreads, sheets, towels and washcloths, kitchen towels, etc.  Pretty interesting, huh?

We know the sales are coming, we just do not have enough brain space to think of our ratty bath towels or even our stained tablecloths at this time.  We are all consumed with Christmas right now-  including me.  But I thought that maybe this year, I will put a little planning into the sales.  I usually don’t start thinking of the house ‘linens’ until March or April and then I get mad at myself for missing the sales!

So I am feeling like a pretty smart shopper right now.  I am going to try to look around the house this week and next to see if I need any new items I really could use.  I know I can use new placemats and napkins to lift up my kitchen after all of my Christmas decorations are put away.  They are not expensive, but on sale it will be a great inexpensive way to update my kitchen.

I am going to try to pick up a few new pillowcase also in a good cotton high thread count. Nothing better than ultra soft pillow and sheets! If you are thinking of painting and doing a bedroom over, January is the time to get the best prices.  And as always, I suggest you buy your bedding first then you choose your paint colors to coordinate.  Much easier that way.

And don’t forget new towels.  You should treat yourself to luxury towels at this time- again because of the deals you can find.  Don’t we know we deserve these small items of comfort?  But honey… it was on sale!!

Just thought I would give you another something else to think about this week.  :)  Can’t wait!  Only 4 days left!!

Where to find some great ‘white sale’ deals in January?  Here are a few of my favorites I will definitely be checking out for sales:

Company C  I absolutely love their rugs, bedding, accessories and fabric. Fun and colorful.  Mid-range prices.

Company C

Crate & Barrel and Pottery Barn of course for a peek.

Cb2-   Crate & Barrel’s little sister. Trendy and fun linens, rugs and accessories at low prices.

Macy’s : Love their bedding collections and usually start my search for the bedroom here.

JC Penney-  You can not beat their prices.

And one of my favorite window treatment (ready made) places to look for sales is Neiman Marcus.  Beautiful stuff!

What’s New In Window Treatments

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

Today I enjoyed a yummy breakfast with my window treatment seamstress extraordinaire, Linda Murphy.

breakfast

You know how I am always pushing you to sample your paint color at home because of how different it will look in your space?  Linda and I discussed today how the same principles apply to fabric; how fabrics can look so different in your home with your lighting, wall colors, trim and other fabrics in room.  It can transform the look of the fabric than what you see on a bolt of fabric in the store.

                                                     Image File

I will be the first to admit I am no genius when it comes to window treatments.  I know what looks good and I can tell if they were custom made or JC Penny made.  I of course keep up with the latest designs and where they are headed.  Color has a lot of do with window treatments also.  You can’t have beautiful window treatments using ugly fabric and colors. That is why I always call in the experts, since they know what fabric will work with which treatments best.

cathy kincaid dining room                                                      Cathy Kincaid

I realize the biggest detriment to custom treatments is the cost.  But besides the fabric making the whole room look finished, there are other benefits to having window treatments. these include year round insulation, combination of controlling light, providing privacy, insulating and/or decorating.  Drapery can also add drama and warmth.

     Larry Laslo Fabrics

And my favorite part of hiring an expert- having someone come into your home, measuring, giving great ideas and suggestion and after completing them, installing in your home to look fabulous for years to come.  Love that!

PLEATED ROMAN SHADE    The Shade Store

Some other interesting subjects we discussed was that silk panels are still strong.  Just take a look in the new fall catalogs, Pottery Barn and   Restoration Hardware to name just a couple.

Dupioni Silk Pole Pocket Drape

I was very surprised when Linda said that she has seen cafe curtains coming back!

Casual Cotton Cafe Curtain   Pottery Barn

No, the new ones look nothing like the outdated ones I had shown on the Top 10 List of Items Still Found in Homes Today.   The current window treatment books show a lot of sheer cafe’s either to the floor or just a 3/4″ cafe with or without  valance on decorative pole with rings.   Very sharp looking.   I found cafe style at Pottery Barn (see above photo) but not Restoration Hardware.  Found some not so nice at Target,  none at Macy’s.  What do you think of cafe curtains?  Am I allowed to say that I like the bottom panel but not the top?  Who says I have to use together?

If cost was not an issue, not even part of the equation, would you hire a window treatment expert to dress your windows for you?
