Working With Existing Kitchen Tile

Friday, November 23rd, 2012

Like many of us working on a room redesign, my friend Rosie from Texas has been updating her kitchen in steps as money and time allows. Here is the original kitchen where we started:

Since Rosie has always dreamed of a white kitchen, her first project was to paint her dark cabinets with Benjamin Moore White Dove Int. Room in a semi-gloss finish:

Rosie has never been too crazy about the color of her range hood:

Until I showed her this beautiful picture :

Rosie wants to maybe replace her existing tile to an all white subway tile (but not in the near future), so for now we need to pick a wall color that will work with the existing tile:

Although Rosie would like to paint the walls white, the clean, bright whiteness of the existing tile made all of the white paint colors we tried next to it, look dirty. Below is a sample of Ben Moore Intense White:

Another color we tried was gray. I suggested a couple grays with different undertones such as Grey Wisp 1570 (green undertones) and below is the tile with samples of Tranquility AF-490 (blue undertones), on the right, with Revere Pewter HC-172 (green undertones- but sometimes looks pink depending on the light) on the left:

I was afraid the Tranquility color would look too baby blue once up on the entire wall. The Revere Pewter worked well with the tile, the hood,  the black granite countertops (black and Revere Pewter look great together!) and the white cabinets. She decided to go with Revere Pewter:

But wait! :) She said that she liked it, but thought it looked a bit too beige and a little boring. She wanted something a little bolder with more personality. If you look at the tile, you will see that not many colors are going to work with it. Not yellow, red or green. The original kitchen had turquoise walls, which worked but Rosie wanted a change. What color is left? Neutral blue.

I know that Rosie loves navy and white together so I suggested that since her kitchen is so open and bright, to try a sample of Hale Navy HC-154 (above). A beautiful color with personality!

Well, she loved it and went for it!:

I think it is beautiful. I like how it toned down the blue in the tile and that it works well with the range hood. And navy with white- gorgeous!:

Rosie is not sure if she loves it. She makes me laugh so hard with her stories about her husband getting mad at her for changing her mind! For now, I told her to try and live with it and see how she feels about it in a couple weeks.

What would you do?? I will keep you updated! Thank you Rosie for letting me share!

If you were to guess what is the number one searched color on my blog, which color would you guess? Navy Blue?

A pretty emerald green maybe?:

Those might be my top guesses. The number one color searched on my Restyling Home By Kelly Blog is Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter HC-172:

A soft greenish gray, Revere Pewter works well in any room of the home:

I have been writing this blog for almost three years now, and today it is still the top searched paint color both daily and over all time:

And then the other day, a reader wrote and asked if I would please post a few pictures of rooms painted with Revere Pewter. So these are for you Alexis!

I love this gray paired with black:

I am glad to have Revere Pewter as one of my large sample boards, because it still is a favorite neutral of mine and I find a lot of my clients are attracted to it. A light gray with warm undertones, this classic shade creates a unifying look that works well with both contemporary and traditional design. I have found Revere Pewter is perfect for an open floor plan:

House Beautiful

Whenever I am asked what my favorite gray color is, the first gray that jumps to mind is Ben Moore Revere Pewter HC-172.

I love it because it is such a warm gray and it works so well in many different rooms in the home. This gray works just as well in a kitchen as it does in the living room.

We know what a great neutral gray is and revere pewter is no exception. You can pair with blues, greens, blacks, and orange. But unlike a lot of other grays, you can use revere pewter with dark brown.

So when my new friend Rosie contacted me for an online color consultation, she asked me if I could suggest a pretty color for her dining room that would work with her artwork and existing furnishings.  She had painted the kitchen, which is visible from the dining room, with Ben Moore Flora AF-470, (a green), that we also had to work with. The before color on the wall below is Interlude AF-135.  She felt the color was reading too ‘pink’ on the walls and also boring.  She contacted me to help her because she knew the look she wanted but needed help with her color choices.

As you can see, the black furniture and the artwork would work beautifully with a gray and Rosie was excited to try a gray.  I looked at various grays with the Flora color and I kept coming back to the Revere Pewter because I have worked with it before and I knew it was a beautiful color. Plus it looked great with the kitchen color Flora. Another gray we looked at was Chelsea Gray HC-168. It also went well with the kitchen color, but we thought it might be too dark with the flooring and furniture.

After painting with revere pewter:

Don’t you think it came out beautiful?  It looks so fresh and clean. Rosie loves it and so do I.  Rosie: “WOW!   I love the Revere Pewter!  It is so pretty and goes great with Flora. The Manchester looks very nice also.  Even my husband who was very bitter because of  repainting loves it.  I am very happy!  All the rooms flow well now.  Thank you so much!  You are awesome!  I will send some pics when the sun goes down more for better lighting.  Thank you Kelly!”
