So, you are buying a new sofa. Are you overwhelmed with all of the choices available?

There are so many choices out there today! The best advice I can give you is to think of this large purchase as an investment. Quality is key and although quality doesn’t come cheap, a good quality sofa will stay more comfortable and retain its looks for a long time. So consider buying the best quality that you can afford! Let me share a few tips you need to know to help make the process easier for you:

If it is at all possible, go to the store and try out the sofas. Sit in them, bounce on them, look at the joints and ask questions. Do you like the look of the legs showing? Or do you like a more informal, casual look with the skirt? The sofa arms are another visual factor to look at. Do you like the look of a rolled arm or squared? Knowing these little facts ahead of time will save you time in the store. I strongly suggest going to the store to actually sit in the sofa and try out rather than purchasing online. As I mentioned, there are so many sofa options out there, how can you be sure you love it if you do not try it out?

A sofa is a large and expensive purchase for most of us. It is better to buy a good quality made couch that will last you for many years instead of buying poor quality goods and then wanting to replace in a couple years because it is beaten and broken. All you need to be aware of when looking for a good quality sofa are a few basic items.

Number One: Frame:

The best frame is made out of kiln-dried hardwood. The process of kiln drying removes all moisture from the wood, enabling it to retain its shape and stability over a long period of time.

In a good quality frame, special attention is paid to the joints, which are glued, dowelled and screwed. The corners are further strengthened by the addition of reinforcing blocks. These provide extra support.

Number Two: Seating Support:

The best seating support is the eight-way hand tied springs system (in the construction of these systems, the craftsman individually ties heavy-gauge coils from front to back, side to side and diagonally (eight ways) to provide the highest level of quality, comfort and durability. This process costs more because it is time consuming and can only be done by hand) wikipedia. You should always test the quality of seating support by sitting on a sofa before you buy it. It shouldn’t sag, but provide good support in the seat and in the back. Just mention you are only interested in the eight-way hand tied support system. They will know you know your stuff!

Number Three: Cushions:

Cushioning separates you from the springs how much you need is up to you. Very often you will have a choice of filling types (look for this information on the hang tag on the cushion). Cheap sofas use foam alone and better sofas use foam core within a down & feather blanket wrap. Down is best.

In the end, quality doesn’t come cheap, but a good quality sofa will stay more comfortable and retain its looks for a long time. So consider buying the best quality that you can afford.

Here are a few more tips and advice for picking out your new sofa:

Neutrals work best in most rooms, especially small rooms, but you can dress up your sofa by using more vibrant colors and patterns in the pillows, or adding throws.

Go with a strong color if you want to make a bold statement, but if you do so, consider buying a sofa with simpler lines.

If you find a comfortable, well- made sofa but are not crazy about the fabric, did you know you can ask the salesperson to see the samples of the fabrics that can also be used? In many cases it will be the same cost or only slightly higher. You can even have it custom made with the material of your choice.

Looking For That Perfect Sofa

Wednesday, February 1st, 2012

Looking for a new sofa has been a mission of mine for about a year now. The more I learn about design and the more pictures I see, the more confused I get!

Part of me wanted to go for a beautiful green sofa:

Which is a great neutral color for a sofa, but in the end, I decided to go with a light and airy look.

I tried looking at a few furniture stores but nothing was interesting me. And then one day it hit me as I was looking through a Pottery Barn catalog:

Pottery Barn

I love this look! I love the clean lines, the freshness, the idea of a neutral sofa that I can just change up the pillows and give the room a whole new look.

pb2Pottery Barn

I knew I would not feel comfortable buying a sofa online without trying it out. So I went to visit a Pottery Barn store with a ton of questions. And boy am I glad I went!

pb3

Too many choices! I tried sitting on a few different styles and was able to knock quite a few off the list because they were very deep cushions (such as the Carlisle Collection) and I knew I did not want that.

What I did know was that I wanted a sofa where the legs of the couch showed to make it more formal. I also knew that I love the rolled arm look and I wanted the brushed canvas in Natural. So here is my new sofa:

It is from the Buchanan Upholstered collection. It comes in both a sofa size (87”) or an apartment sofa size (79”). I am going to measure next to see which size will fit best. Here is the space where it is going:

I love pictures of rooms where the sofa is placed up against the windows. The walls in my living room are currently painted Ben Moore Honeymoon which was pretty but now that I know so much more about color, I am changing the wall color to a soft white. Painting the walls white will let your eye continue on through the windows to the outside instead of stopping at the yellow walls.

Getting Clean vs. Dirty Colors to Work Together

Saturday, October 8th, 2011

Remember my ‘Worst Client Ever ‘story?:

IMG_8652

Well, when we moved in and the sofa was brought into the room, the fabric looked ‘dirty’ against the ‘clean’ color of the newly painted Manchester Tan walls:

IMG_8651

At first thought I would buy a slipcover to hide the sofa color, but then I decided to try and work with what I had without spending money. Then I found this beautiful throw at crate&barrel:

IMG_8656

The colors are vibrant and bright. Although the sofa and throw coordinate and work together, compared to the sofa, the throw looks ‘clean’. Do you see what I mean?:

IMG_8666

Now look at the sofa and the wall behind:

IMG_8664

With the throw ‘disguising’ the sofa, the prominence of the clean vs. dirty is not as obvious. I think it is working together much better. Although I will not be able to use the picture I wanted to use on the wall behind:

IMG_8677

Looks great with the wall color but look with the sofa:

IMG_8672

Not working. A mirror would be perfect but I have one on the wall right next to it:

IMG_8650

Time to reshuffle my artwork around. Do you move your wall art around to different rooms? It makes the room look fresh and new again. I am going to try this picture next:

IMG_8684

I think it will work beautifully! There is enough clean white in the picture for the walls and hopefully the yellow beige in the picture will bring in the sofa. I will share after I hang the picture. Here is another example of making clean vs. dirty work (read here):

IMG_8686

See how the yellow bedding is clashing with the brown (red undertones) headboard?  I switched out my comforter from another room that has the same brown undertones:

IMG_8688

Working much better together!

So the moral of this story: yes you can mix clean and dirty colors together. You just have to use a little creativity mixed with your undertone knowledge to make it work.

Have you had success mixing duller and cleaner colors together? Comments?
